Higher education means the education that students get after passing the HSC, usually in universities or colleges. In Bangladesh, higher education is given in two types of institutions — public (government) universities and private universities, as well as many colleges under the National University (NU). There are currently 37 public universities, up from only four in 1971. There are also 93 private universities, which are a newer addition. Along with these, about 1,400 colleges also provide higher education under NU.

Most students dream of getting into public universities because they offer good education in subjects like Arts, Science, Commerce, and Engineering. They also have improved libraries, labs, and research assistance.. Some public universities also offer hostel facilities. But unfortunately, public universities cannot take in all the students due to limited seats. So, many students have to go to private universities, but the cost is very high. Most families in our country are middle-class or poor, and they struggle to afford this education. We cannot fix this problem in one day, but we can make it better step by step. The number of universities should be increased. Poor and village students should also get equal chances. The quality and facilities of education must be improved. The government should take proper steps to solve these problems and make higher education easier for all.

বঙ্গানুবাদ: বাংলাদেশে উচ্চশিক্ষা সাধারণত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো যে শিক্ষা প্রদান করে তাকে উচ্চশিক্ষা বলা হয়। এটা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যায়ের বা তৃতীয় পর্যায়ের শিক্ষা নামেও পরিচিত। বাংলাদেশে দুই ধরনের শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান আছে যেগুলো উচ্চশিক্ষা প্রদান করে: সরকারি ও বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, এবং জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধিভুক্ত কলেজসমূহ। বর্তমানে ৩৭টি সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আছে যেখানে ১৯৭১ সালে মাত্র ৪টি ছিল। তাছাড়া আমাদের দেশে ৯৩টি বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আছে যা আপেক্ষিকভাবে একটি নতুন বিষয়। প্রায় ১,৪০০ টি উচ্চ শিক্ষা প্রদানকারী কলেজও আছে। বেশির ভাগ শিক্ষার্থীর প্রথম পছন্দ হচ্ছে সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো। এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কলা, বিজ্ঞান, বাণিজ্য, প্রকৌশলী ইত্যাদি বিষয়ে শিক্ষা প্রদান করে। এগুলো নবীন জ্ঞান অন্বেষণকারীদের সাহায্য করতে উন্নত লাইব্রেরি ও গবেষণা সুযোগ-সুবিধা প্রদান করে। হাতে গোনা কিছু সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে আবাসিক ও বোর্ডিং সুবিধাও সহজলভ্য। ধারণ ক্ষমতার অভাবের কারণে অধিকাংশ শিক্ষার্থী এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে উচ্চ শিক্ষা গ্রহণ করতে পারে না। তাই, তাদের অতিশয় বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ওপর নির্ভর করতে হয়। কিন্তু এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়াশোনার খরচ অনেক। যেহেতু বেশির ভাগ শিক্ষার্থী মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবার এবং গ্রাম থেকে আসে, তাদের পরিবারকে এই খরচ বহন করতে হিমশিম খেতে হয়। এই সমস্যা এক রাতে সমাধান করা হয়তো অসম্ভব, কিন্তু তা ক্রমশ কমানো যেতে পারে। প্রথমত, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সংখ্যা অবশ্যই বাড়াতে হবে। দরিদ্র শিক্ষার্থীদেরকে অন্যদের মতো সুযোগ করে দিতে হবে। তাছাড়া, শিক্ষা খাতের সুযোগ- সুবিধা বৃদ্ধি ও উন্নত করা উচিত। সরকারকে সমস্যা সমাধানের লক্ষ্যে দায়িত্ব নিতে হবে এবং যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করতে হবে।
